Challenge to Solve
Intravenous injection is a hands-on clinical skill that demands precise hand positioning, controlled force, and consistent step-by-step execution. Learners must develop controlled needle handling and respond to subtle cues during needle insertion, yet traditional training tools like mannequin arms offer little to no tactile feedback, making it difficult to build muscle memory.
Training on patients also carries risks, including multiple failed attempts, bruising or hematomas, and infiltration or extravasation. Because of these safety concerns, supervisors must limit practice opportunities, which slows skill development. At the same time, learners often experience significant anxiety and performance pressure when working on real people, affecting hand stability, decision making, and early success rates.
To address these challenges, HUAGING collaborated with Asia Eastern University of Science and Technology (AEUST) and SenseGlove to create a VR training module aligned with standard clinical practice, providing a safer and more effective way to practice IV injection procedures.
Implementation of the Glove
The IV injection simulation follows a professionally validated clinical training script to ensure correct procedural flow and standardized execution.
The SenseGlove Nova 2 was integrated to support physical skill development through force feedback, vibrotactile cues, and active contact feedback. These haptic inputs allow trainees to feel pressure, resistance, and contact during each step of the procedure, reinforcing correct hand positioning and controlled needle insertion.
Trainees practice core actions such as grasping, positioning, and instrument control in a repeatable way, supporting muscle memory development and improving transfer of manual skills to clinical settings.
Results
The completed VR module delivers a consistent IV injection training experience that can be repeated without additional equipment or patient involvement. The result is a scalable VR training solution that supports frequent, standardized practice aligned with clinical technique for safer and more effective training outcomes.
Trainees benefit from meaningful haptic feedback, supporting reduced beginner anxiety, increased confidence, and thereby fewer errors during patient procedures.
VR training enriched with haptic gloves is a powerful approach to optimizing clinical skills development within the healthcare sector.
