Challenge to solve
Modern life has made it increasingly difficult for people to engage with traditional folk arts, such as dance and martial arts. But combining tradition with technology can lead to unique ways for people to experience their culture in an immersive way. For this reason, Huaging collaborated with the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) to bring users closer to Taiwanese culture through VR haptics.
Implementation of haptic gloves
Huaging and the NCSIST created a VR experience of the traditional “Song Jiang Battle Array”
— a legendary military procession that is part of Taiwanese folklore. To make this VR experience fully
immersive, they integrated the SenseGlove Nova 2 haptic gloves. By wearing the Nova 2, users could
simulate the movements of traditional performers in the VR scenario, feel the virtual traditional
weapons, and interact with them realistically. With the sense of touch that the haptic gloves added,
this immersive experience connected users with traditional folk culture in a unique manner.
Results
Beyond an entertaining VR experience, this project allowed participants to gain a deeper
understanding and appreciation of traditional Taiwanese culture. Through the integration of
technological innovation into this ancient art form, Huaging and the NCSIST contributed to cultural
preservation and innovation with this experience, making users active participants in Taiwan’s
heritage.
